I was talking with my sister on the phone yesterday about how we spend our time.  Literally, some days I have so much going on but get so distracted that it’s like “IF YOU GIVE A BLONDE A COOKIE!” It can be hard to figure out where to start or which project to tackle first!  I sometimes get parts of a lot of little things done and never feel like anything is done.  Can you relate?

I was reminded of the book by Gary Keller, The One Thing.

Gary Keller as you may know is the Chairman and founder of Keller Williams Realty, Inc., which is the largest real estate company in the world by agent count.  An Impressive guy.

In his book, he discusses goals, focus, success and how to choose which things to work on and what to let roll to the back burner.

I think one of the hardest jobs as a mom is deciding how to use my time.

Time.

It’s fleeting and when you are raising kids, there are SO many interruptions or challenges in the flow of the day.

So, his premise in the book is around focus, which is really interesting in this very distractible world.  He asks this; “What is the ONE THING that if by doing it, everything will be easier or unnecessary.”

Oh.  That kind of puts a spin on things.  I can DO this!  ONE Thing!  I can focus on one thing.

He talks about how narrowing your focus can bring clarity.  Here are a few other versions of that question that he shows as they relate to your goals.

I wrote this down a few weeks ago and put it on my bulletin board.  When I get a little confused about what to tackle next, I can look at it.

Maybe the one thing is to make dinner for tonight ….even thought it’s 10 am in the morning.  Or maybe it’s getting that time consuming spreadsheet done to get it out of my brain and lighten my mental load.

Lilly is Thinking About It…

Maybe it’s taking a nap.  Maybe it’s sitting with my Bible and really reaching into to it to see what God says about a problem I’m struggling with.

What’s the ONE THING for you today? That if by doing it, everything else would be easier or unnecessary.
